What is the ideal room temperature for babies?
You might expect a simple answer here, but it's a little more nuanced than that. While 68-72°F (20-22°C) is widely recommended as a comfortable range for baby sleep, the AAP focuses less on hitting an exact number and more on dressing your baby appropriately for the room they're sleeping in. That's because safe sleep temperature isn't just about the thermostat. It's the combination of room temp, what baby is wearing, and the bedding they're using.
So why does room temperature still matter?
Overheating has been linked to an increased risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), and it can happen when a room is too warm, baby is wearing too many layers, or both.
A good rule of thumb: if the room feels comfortable for you in light clothing, it's probably about right for your baby too. Keep the room well ventilated, dress baby in appropriate sleepwear for the conditions (a sleep sack is a great option instead of loose blankets), and skip hats or beanies for indoor sleep. Babies regulate their temperature through their head and face, so keeping those uncovered is really important.
